50-yo arrested over threats made against High Court judge

Police have made an arrest in relation to the death threat made against High Court Chief Judge Shujau Usman.

Ali Murthala, 50, from Maafushi island in Kaafu atoll was arrested under a court order issued by the Kaashidhoo Magistrate Court.

As per the order, Ali Murthala had made threats against Judge Usman at around 5:15pm on Friday. Police is to have requested an arrest warrant for Murthala after speaking with witnesses.

The judge was on holiday with family, when he received the threat.

Usman was appointed to the High Court bench in 2015, and was elected as its chief last year. He previously served at the Criminal Court.

In a statement released on Saturday, the court "strongly" condemned the threat made against the chief judge.
