Majlis committee to look into misconduct issue involving Broadcom chief
Mariyam Waheedha was appointed to Broadcom on December 5, and elected as its president the same day

Parliament’s independent institutions’ committee will be looking into a misconduct issue involving the president of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom), as soon as it convenes next year.
Chair of the committee, Meedhoo constituency MP Rozaina Adam announced this via Twitter on Wednesday.
The decision comes after Mariyam Waheedha hosted a government event titled ‘Burabi’ on Tuesday. Government officials took part in the tourism ministry event, held to announce the land and islands to be leased for tourism.
Mariyam Waheedha was appointed to the broadcasting commission earlier this month, and was elected as its president through an internal vote the same day. A media veteran, she has been the master of ceremonies at a number of events held across the country.
While Mariyam hosted a government event despite being a member of the broadcasting regulator, those in the same position during the previous administration faced scrutiny for similar acts from then opposition members.
Maduvvari constituency MP, and a senior official of the current opposition People’s National Congress (PNC) party, Adam Shareef Umar noted this and questioned whether Broadcom is “functioning independently now?”
