A number of prominent figures have expressed interest in running for the post of Malé City mayor in the 2020 local council elections.
While the current mayor, Shifa Mohamed who is a member of the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has also announced plans to contest for re-election, others from the party have expressed interest in the post as well.
The party’s general secretary Afshan Latheef announced decision to run on Sunday, noting that the newly ratified amendments to the Decentralization Act will enable the formation of a proper system.
Afshan added that her aim is to create a safe and secure environment for all the residents of Malé.
Housing Minister during the previous administration, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is also running for mayor. The opposition announced this at a press conference on Sunday, adding that the only way to improve conditions in the city “is to elect an experienced individual.”
Muizzu had been subject to immense scrutiny during his time as minister, especially over the continued stormwater pump systems in the capital.
Furthermore, former MP Alhan Fahmy has also announced his candidacy for capital city mayor. Alhan, a former senior official of MDP, contested in this year’s parliamentary elections on a Jumhooree Party ticket.
The 2020 Local Council Elections are to be held in April.
