Senior figures of the opposition movement have shared information on the current situation in the Maldives with foreign diplomats.

The team that had traveled to Sri Lanka is made up from key figures in Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM), Jumhooree Party (JP) and Adhaalath Party (AP). Henveyru North Constituency MP Abdullah Shahid, Vilingili Constituency MP Saud Hussain and MDP Government’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Naseem had also attended the meeting.

Speaking to Raajje.mv from Colombo, Shahid said that they had shared information of the current situation in the country, including the illegal activities of the Government, jailing of political opponents and the trials against them.

He also said they had updated the diplomats on the details of the murder of blogger Yameen Rasheed.

The opposition figures met UK Second Secretary Philip Dickinson, Ambassador of the UK to Sri Lanka and the Maldives and Deputy Canadian Ambassador.

After the meeting Dauris tweeted that the “multi-party delegation updating me on cross-society concerns” and that “pressures on party leaders and free speech [was] especially worrying.”
