Local Council Elections 2020: constituencies to be announced by December-end

Although constituencies are yet to be announced, a few have already begun campaigns to run for the elections

ECM revealed that the Local Council Elections will be held during April 2020

Elections Commission of the Maldives (EC) has revealed that constituencies for the Local Council Elections 2020 will be announced within the last week of December 2019.

Elections Commissioner Ahmed Shareef revealed this decision at the first meeting of the National Advisory Committee for the 2020 elections held on Tuesday.

He added that they were initially set to announce the constituencies during January, however they preponed it to December following concerns by some political parties that are working to hold their primaries at an earlier date.

Further, Shareef stated that the commission is planning a trip to southernmost Addu City in the near future to hold discussions on deciding the number and details of constituencies to be announced.

Earlier, the Elections Commissioner revealed that the number of councilors and constituencies for major cities like Addu and capital city Malé may increase.

While the EC will be announcing the constituencies within the last week of December, it will give a period of two months for political parties to hold their primaries.

The Local Council Elections 2020 is to be held in April.

With this being said, although constituencies are yet to be announced, a few individuals have already expressed interest to run for the council elections, via social media. As such, campaigns have already begun on social media, for a few individuals interested to contest, while political parties prepare for primaries.
