Officials of the former ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has met with the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Maldives, Caron Rohsler, in their efforts to free jailed former President Abdulla Yameen.

The meeting was held on Wednesday, and PPM said that the purpose of the meeting was to inform the ambassador on the former president's "unfair and politically motivated imprisonment."

The UK embassy is yet issue a comment regarding the meeting.

Former President Yameen was sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of laundering USD one million from the state, last Thursday. He was also issued a USD five million fine, to be paid in six months.

While the former ruling party has met with the UK ambassador to share concerns over Yameen’s case, PPM had during its administration called on the international community to stay out of Maldives’ “domestic affairs”.
