President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's nomination for Prosecutor General (PG), Hussain Shameem, has been approved by the parliament's Judiciary Committee upon further review.

The president announced decision to forward Shameem's name to the post late Monday night. In addition to Shameem, former Deputy PG Mariyam Nihayath, and lawyer Ahmed Zaneen had applied for the post.

The judiciary committee interviewed Shameem at Monday night's meeting. It approved him to the post, right after the interview.

Shameem was previously the Deputy Prosecutor General during former President Abdulla Yameen's regime and has extensive experience in the legal profession.

Shameem is nominated for the vacancy left behind by former PG, Aishath Bisham, who resigned on November 28.

Bisham resigned amidst an impeachment inquiry launched against her by the parliament’s judiciary committee. Before her resignation, she released a public statement claiming that the inquiry against her was "unconstitutional".

Bisham was appointed to the post by former President Abdulla Yameen in November 2015 and resigned following allegations of allowing the former government to influence the PG Office’s work during his tenure.
