President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's nomination for Prosecutor General (PG), Hussain Shameem, has been forwarded to the parliament's Judiciary Committee for further review.

The president revealed via twitter that, out of all the candidates that applied for the vacancy of PG, the name of Hussain Shameem was forwarded to the parliament for approval.

Shameem was previously the Deputy Prosecutor General during former President Abdulla Yameen's regime.

In addition to Shameem, former Deputy PG Mariyam Nihayath, and lawyer Ahmed Zaneen also applied for the position.

The deadline for applications for the position ended on Sunday.

The president's office announced the vacancy on Thursday following the resignation of former PG, Aishath Bisham, on the same day.

While announcing her resignation via Twitter, the president thanked Bisham for “her services during her tenure as prosecutor general” and wished her “every success in the future.”

Bisham resigned amidst an impeachment inquiry launched against her by the parliament’s judiciary committee.

In a statement released prior to the announcement of her resignation, the now-former PG said that the inquiry against her was in violation of the constitution.
