The man arrested in connection to the attack on the 26 year-old fisherman, Ismail Hammadh, has been remanded for ten days.
The identity of the suspect has not been disclosed by authorities but they revealed the suspect is a 30 year old male.
He was remanded for an additional ten days by the Magistrate Court of Rasdhoo island in Alif Alif atoll.
The attacker is one of the victim's crew mates. While some sources claim that the crew consisted of three people aside from Hammadh, others say the crew had more than three people.
Hammadh was attacked on a sea-cucumber fishing boat outside of Maalhos island in Alif Alif atoll on Thursday night.
According to reports, Hammadh was attacked after an argument broke out, allegedly, during a religious discussion.
He reportedly swam to Maalhos after jumping overboard to save himself and begged for help from the nearest house to the shore around 3:00 am on Friday morning, says witnesses.
Witnesses also reported seeing the two perpetrators searching for while Hammadh was being treated at the island's health centre. Islanders informed the police of the suspicious outsiders, and the perpetrators were questioned and taken into police custody soon afterwards.
While reports say that two people were taken into police custody, authorities have only arrested one of the crew mates so far.
Since the incident, it has come to light that Hammadh and his crew-mates have hard-line extremist religious ideologies and all of them have unregistered illegal marriages to children.
The Ministry of Gender and Family revealed that relevant authorities were informed after Hammadh's 13 year old child bride was revealed to be pregnant, following outrage on social media due to the failure of authorities to take action against Hammadh.
Investigation into the case is still ongoing.
