President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has extended Victory Day greetings to the people of Maldives.

The president, via Twitter, extended greetings and good wishes as the country marks the 31st anniversary of the Victory Day, and remembered those that sacrificed their lives for the country.

Victory Day is celebrated annually to mark the defeat of the attempted coup where a handful of Maldivians committed treason and threatened the country's independence.

19 Maldivians lost their lives that day, including army officers, and the day is marked in their remembrance.

The mastermind of the coup, Abdulla Luthufee was caught and sentenced to death. While his sentence was later commuted, he fled after being granted medical leave during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration.

His return to the country, and prison this July, has been one of the incumbent administration's biggest victories since assuming office last November.

Luthufee’s case has since been forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office.
