The Southern Conference 2019, a councilors conference for southern-atolls has successfully concluded.
A total of five atoll councils from Addu City, Fuvahmulah City, Gaaf Alif, Gaaf Dhaal and Laamu atoll had participated in the one-day conference, launched by Speaker of Parliament and Former President Mohamed Nasheed in Villingili island of Gaaf Alif atoll on Thursday morning.
Three proposals were submitted from atoll councils during the conference, all three of which were passed with amendments unanimously by all five councils present.
The conference was carried out in three sessions, the first was moderated by Speaker Nasheed where Hahdhunmathi atoll council presented a proposal on connectivity. This proposal was passed and will be forwarded to the People’s Majlis floor and government institutions within a span of three days, with additional amendments.
The second session, moderated by Rifaa’ath Rasheed from the Ministry of Tourism, saw a proposal submitted from the Gaaf Dhaal atoll council in order to increase the benefits of tourism in southernmost atolls.
This proposal was passed with recommendations from MPs and atoll councils.
Further, the third and last proposal by Addu City council on the establishment of the Southern Regional Alliance was also passed.
During the closing ceremony on Thursday night, Speaker Nasheed had signed an agreement and launched Gaaf Alif Atoll Council’s new website as well.
Additionally, the formal logo and trophy was also launched during the ceremony.
