Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed has requested the details of the parliamentarians accused of being involved in the country’s biggest corruption scandal.
Parliament's secretary general, Aminath Niusha announced this at a press conference on Sunday.
It was revealed, last week, that a number of senior government officials and parliamentarians are being investigated in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) case.
While Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham revealed this during a committee meeting last Monday, the Presidential Commission on Corruption and State recovery has since revealed further details in the matter. However, the identities of the accused officials have not been disclosed.
During a joint conference with the police and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday, presidential commission president Ahmed As’ad disclosed that the money funnelled through the MMPRC graft was spread out throughout the government, including heads of independent institutions, members of parliament, judges, military officers, and journalists.
As’ad further stated that the MMPRC graft money was used to influence certain dealings, including election campaigns.
The following parties are to have received funds from the MMPRC graft:
- 44 members from the 18th parliament
- 16 members from the 19th parliament
- five heads of independent institutions
- seven officials from the incumbent administration
- 23 officials from the previous administration
- six judges
- seven security service officers
