Parliament’s committee on economic affairs has approved Fathuhulla Jameel as Commissioner General of Taxation.
While President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had forwarded two names for the post -Jameel and Ismail Nadhid- the committee approved the former at a meeting on Wednesday.
The committee interviewed both individuals this week.
Fathuhulla Jameel currently serves at Dhiraagu, and has previously held posts at Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA). He also played a key role in raising awareness in tax related issues, when the system was introduced during former President Mohamed Nasheed’s administration.
Nashid is currently serving at the Maldives Customs Service.
President Solih had also forwarded six names for the post of Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation.
They are, Mohamed Siraj Muneer, Asma Shafeeu, Ismail Sajid, Ahmed Shareef, Ahmed Wafir and Hamdhy Agheel.
The committee on economic affairs has approved Asma and Sajid for the deputy post and both names will be forwarded to the parliament, and a vote will be taken.
As per last month’s amendment to the Tax Administration Act, a commissioner general must be appointed within 30 days from the date of ratification; the amendment was ratified on September 17.
