Maldives Police Service (MPS) has launched a probe into the involvement of police officers in the largest embezzlement scandal in the country’s history implicating Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

Police confirmed via a statement that its Professional Standards Command began the probe on 13 October following allegations against a few officers for having a hand in a case related to the MMPRC scandal.

The statement however, did not reveal a specific number of officers being probed, RaajjeMV understands that these will be released later.

It has been reported that officers of different ranks are being probed, some of whom are commissioned and hold positions at an executive level.

While said officers have been suspended from work, Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham on Monday revealed that a few members of the parliament’s pubic accounts committee are being investigated in connection to the MMPRC embezzlement case.

MMPRC’s graft case saw the misappropriation of MVR 1.4 billion (US$90 million) through state coffers into private accounts involving senior government officials.
