The Ministry of Health has decided to set up mobile laboratories in various islands.
The project was officially launched in Laamu atoll on Sunday evening, by the health minister Abdulla Ameen.
The minister highlighted that despite every island having an established healthcare center, only 90 islands currently have a laboratory in the Maldives.
While speaking at the ceremony, Minister Abdulla Ameen stated that establishing a laboratory generally costs a minimum of MVR four million, therefore a more economical method is required to make healthcare more accessible to all Maldivians.
The mobile laboratory service will allow blood testing services to be carried out in all the islands of the entire atoll using samples taken from the Health Center of the respective island.
These mobile laboratories are the government's cost-effective solution to provide lab testing services to each and every island of the Maldives.
The minister further stated that this has been the biggest step taken to develop laboratory services in the Maldives.
The health ministry stated that laboratory testing can be carried out in any part of the Maldives within one year of the launch of these mobile laboratories.
The minister further disclosed that all the common types of lab testing such as blood sugar testing will be available in these mobile laboratories.
