Male’ Tenants Union (MTU), an organization formed to protect the rights of people living in rented accommodations, has officially been registered.
The union was formally registered on Tuesday morning by the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Community Empowerment.
In a statement released by the MTU, it was established to allow tenants to voice their frustrations and concerns in addition to providing official recognition to the issues faced by tenants living in Male’. They also stated that any individual living on rent is welcome to register and join the union.
Furthermore, the Union disclosed its plans to ensure and defend renter’s rights, provide assistance to renters, as well as a camp. They are also arranging for other services such as assistance in moving house, negotiating contracts, obtaining home insurance and assisting in hiring a lawyer for any relevant issues.
They also promise to campaign for legislation protecting renters’ rights and rent control with the support of its members.
Additionally, they highlighted the existence of powerful organizations that protect the rights of landlords but the complete lack of institutions that safeguard the rights of tenants until now.
While drawing attention to the fact that 63% or the majority of Male’ residents rent spaces, MTU attributes the government's negligence to protect tenants’ rights to the lack of an official tenant’s union. Hence, MTU states becoming a registered member of the MTU is a step forward towards ensuring the rights of tenants.
