Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan has stated that investment in the country's waste management system "needs improvement."
In response to a question by Hoarafushi constituency MP Ahmed Saleem at Monday's parliament sitting, the minister stated that investment in waste management needs to be developed, and that the country's waste management system was in deteriorating condition at the time of handover from one administration to the other. He added that the ministry is making efforts to rectify these issues.
During the sitting, MP Ahmed Saleem highlighted the increasing issue of waste management faced by Hoarafushi, Thuraakunu, and Uligamu. He noted that the ministry sent a representative in the past year to assess the situation and promised to provide assistance. Saleem went on to question whether these issues will be addressed by the ministry.
The minister admitted that although Hoarafushi has an established waste management center, it is missing certain equipment.
“We can guarantee that work on it (Hoarafushi waste management center) will conclude by the end of the year. We are also currently working on issues faced by larger islands.”Minister of Environment Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan![]()
