Former Supreme Court Justice Ali Hameed is now a free man.
Hameed was found guilty of obstruction of justice and influencing official conduct in 2018. While he was sentenced to nearly five months for the former, the High Court overturned the ruling in December. However, both the High Court and Supreme Court upheld the one year, seven month and six days’ sentence for influencing official conduct.
Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) said that he completed his sentence this September.
Hameed was transferred to house arrest in November 2018.
The justice, along with the Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed, were arrested and sentenced during the political crisis that ensued after the Supreme Court ordered the release of political prisoners.
While the prisoners were ordered to be released on the grounds of violations of due process during their trials, then-President Abdulla Yameen accused them of conspiring with the opposition to overthrow his government, and had instead declared a nation-wide state of emergency.
