Vice President Faisal Naseem has met with officials to discuss sea transportation safety.

The meeting held on Sunday at the President’s Office was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, the Coast Guard and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).

During the meeting, discussions were mainly focused on finding additional ways to ensure safety at sea during transportation of residents and cargo, including necessary changes which need to be brought to the rules and regulations, an early alert system in case of an incident, and awareness campaigns regarding sea safety and operation of small seafaring vessels.

Moreover, further discussions were held regarding measures to ensure that all rules and regulations are being fully adopted and executed by all transporters, and incorporating island and atoll councils in monitoring the implementation process.

Discussions were also held on re-convening the National Search and Rescue Committee to find ways to address such issues.
