The parliament committee has approved Judicial Service Commission (JSC)’s request to impeach Supreme Court Justice Abdulla Didi.
The judiciary committee has sent its report to the floor.
The report states that JSC’s decision was according to the Constitution and JSC’s regulation, adding that the decision to impeach Didi was approved with votes from the eight members present at the meeting.
In a press statement, JSC stated that they decided to submit the request since they find no reason to change their investigative report.
JSC had given Justice Didi 30 days to respond to its report. While Didi responded via letter, JSC found no reason to make any changes based on Didi’s statement.
Didi has been accused of accepting a one million US dollar bribe in 2015 to sentence former President Mohamed Nasheed to 13 years in prison. He has also been accused of using his position as a top court judge to gain undue influence over others.
