The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is seeking charges against the former managing director of Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), for the purchase of a used truck through a company with links to him.
While Mohamed Shifau is to have bought the used vehicle from Cubic Investment, where he is a shareholder, ACC has forwarded the case for prosecution.
ACC said that the “emergency” agreement with Cubic Investment was signed to introduce caps light systems in the country.
The corruption watchdog’s investigation shows that WAMCO had first made a request for a one-tonne dump truck but later revised it to a 350-kilo one.
ACC had also obtained documents related to the truck from Maldives Customs, Transport Authority and its Japanese exporter, which showed that the 350-kilo dump truck purchased by WAMCO was a used one.
The probe also revealed that the company had only obtained one quotation for the vehicle, despite being required to acquire more than one to compare prices prior to making such a purchase.
Hence, ACC’s investigation proved that WAMCO’s former MD had used undue influence to give preferential treatment to a certain party.
