Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) will be applying for registration after the holidays, says senior member Abdul Aleem.
Aleem told RaajjeMV that MRM has gained 3,000 members before the Elections Commission (EC)’s deadline, which is August 27.
Higher Education Minister Ibrahim Hassan had first requested approval to form MRM on February 19 and then withdrew the request near the deadline.
Afterwards, Minister Yumna requested approval to form MRM on May 27.
3,000 membership applications need to be submitted within three months after the EC gives approval to form the party.
Once registered, MRM would become the third party that former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has formed. Maumoon formed his first part, Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), in 2008 and left after disagreements with party leader Ahmed Thasmeen.
He formed Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in 2011 but left after a dispute within the party leadership led to the Supreme Court handing over leadership to then President Abdulla Yameen, Maumoon’s half-brother.
