Parliament has approved five candidates for Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) membership.

12 candidates had applied for the position, including former Auditor General Ibrahim Niyaz, who was not approved.

Adam Shamil was also not approved, even though he received the second highest marks.

The approved candidates are: Ibrahim Shakeel, Fathimath Anoola, Mariyam Shiuna, Ali Ashraf, and Aishath Abdulla.

Parliament was asked to vote on seven candidates, out of which Niyaz and Shamil failed to receive the required number of votes. The parliament did not vote for the rest of the candidates.

Presenting the independent institutions committee’s report to the floor, Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam said the marks were based on the candidate’s education level, work experience, the interview, and integrity.

Committee chair Rozaina said their integrity were based on the interview, social media posts, and the letters sent to the committee regarding the candidates.
