Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb is still on the tugboat which he had used to attempt to flee authorities.
Adeeb was captured while fleeing to India on the tugboat under the pretense of being a crew member.
Indian news agency IANS cited officials in the district administration and police saying that Adeeb is still on the tugboat at Tuticorin Port being questioned by government agencies.
The Maldives police service has also confirmed Adeeb’s arrest while attempting to flee.
In the statement, the police stated that Adeeb’s passport was confiscated under a Supreme Court order and that he had failed to present himself for an interrogation over the MMPRC embezzlement case.
Police said that they are working with Indian authorities to return him to Maldives and that they will investigate and take action against those involved in his attempted escape.
While Adeeb’s prison sentences have been overturned, the state has appealed one of his verdicts at the Supreme Court and requested that his passport be withheld. The Supreme Court agreed to withhold his passport until the conclusion of the appeal.
