United States Secretary of State Michael Pompeo has sent greetings on the occasion of Maldives’ Independence Day.

In a press statement, the Secretary of State wished the people of Maldives a joyous Independence Day.

He said it has been inspiring to witness Maldives’ democratic transformation, and that the United States remains dedicated to further strengthening the two countries’ bilateral relationship.

“I look forward to continuing to collaborate with the Government of Maldives in the years ahead to support your reform efforts and achieve our vision of a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region,”

Other countries that sent their Independence Day greetings include Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Norway, Canada, Germany, and Mexico.

Maldives declared its independence from the British on July 26, 1965.
