No official in the previous government had attempted to influence state prosecution cases, says Prosecutor General (PG) Aishath Bisham.
At the judiciary committee meeting last week, PG Bisham was also asked if she had gone to the President’s Office and discussed the PG office’s work, which resulted in prosecution or making changes to cases.
PG Bisham said she visited the President’s Office for weekly meetings as a member of the national drug council, adding that the photo of her leaving the President’s Office shared on social media was after the conclusion of such a meeting.
She said that neither then President Abdulla Yameen nor anyone requested her to proceed with cases in a particular way.
During the previous administration, PG Bisham drew public outrage after photos of her outside the President’s Office with then home minister Azleem Ahmed was shared online.
At the time, the PG office was proceeding with the prosecution of opposition leaders and judges after the controversy over the February 1, 2018, Supreme Court order.
