President Ibrahim Mohamed has congratulated Boris Johnson, who replaced Theresa May as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on Wednesday.
President Solih, via Twitter, said that his administration “looks forward” to working with PM Johnson and the British government “to further the already excellent relations between Maldives and the UK.”
A controversial figure within British politics, Johnson beat Jeremy Hunt in the Conservative Party leadership race on Tuesday, winning 92,153 votes to his rival's 46,656.
Queen Elizabeth II accepted Theresa May's resignation and appointed Johnson as Prime Minister on Wednesday, with Johnson promising that the United Kingdom would leave the European Union on 31 October 2019 during his first speech as PM.
Speaker and former President Mohamed Nasheed also congratulated the new Prime Minister via Twitter, adding that “Britain now has a chance to shine, at home and abroad.”
Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid said that Maldives "looks forward to further strengthening the reignited ties between both nations."
