Employment Tribunal President Ahmed Shifau has falsely claimed at a parliament committee meeting that he has no stake at a law firm.

Tribunal officials were summoned for questioning at the judiciary committee meeting on Tuesday.

At the meeting, Thulhaadhoo MP Hisaan Husain asked if they have a stake at a law firm.

Tribunal President Shifau said that he had a stake at a law firm when he joined the Tribunal, which was on May 14, 2018, and that he filed the necessary paperwork to relinquish his stake once he became a Tribunal member.

Advogado Law Firm was registered in 2013 with Shifau claiming a 50% stake. RaajjeMV has received the partnership profile information sheet from the economic ministry, which showed that Shifau is still a stakeholder.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, Shifau said that once he sent a letter notifying of his leave from the law firm, he has not yet checked whether the law firm has confirmed his dismissal, since he is busy working full time at the Tribunal.

Shifau said he has recently contacted the law firm, which stated that it has requested the economic ministry to relinquish Shifau’s stake, adding that he had not known that he still had a stake in the firm when he was summoned to the parliament committee.

Giving false information to the parliament is a criminal offense, and the parliament is proceeding with an investigation on a Bank of Maldives official over such a case.
