British Ambassador James Dauris has said the Maldivian people should be proud of the conclusion of Commonwealth observers of the 2019 Maldives parliamentary elections.
In a tweet on Monday, Ambassador Dauris said the Commonwealth report and its recommendations deserve thinking about.
In the final report, the Commonwealth observer group concluded that the elections were conducted in a peaceful, credible, transparent and inclusive manner and commended the people of Maldives for the peaceful and orderly way in which they exercised their democratic right to vote on April 6.
The report has been presented to Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland as well as to the Maldives government and political parties.
Maldives left the Commonwealth during the previous administration, amid mounting pressure from the group over corruption and deteriorating human rights.
The new government has been working to rejoin the organization.
