Ebola outbreak in Congo declared global health emergency, HPA on alert

HPA has activated a response plan in response to the declaration of the health emergency

International media reports chances of Ebola spreading outside the Congo region remains low

This is the fifth declaration of its kind by the WHO

Following the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Maldives Health Protection Agency (HPA) has launched a response plan to take immediate measures to protect the country.

HPA via twitter revealed that their response plan has been activated shortly after news reports began circulating globally that the Ebola outbreak constitutes a “public health emergency” of international concern.

As such, HPA’s tweet reads that it has been closely following the outbreak after the World Health Organization (WHO)’s declaration of the health emergency.

Further, the agency has given the public its assurance that all the recommended measures to protect the nation from the deathly disease.

As such, the Health Emergency Coordination Committee met on Thursday morning to discuss the preparatory actions that are required to be taken.

The health emergency was announced on Wednesday and upon investigating the chances the virus could spread to the region, HPA learnt that the chances are slim.

While international media reports that the chances of Ebola spreading outside the Congo region remains low, a health emergency of international concern is defined as an “extraordinary event” that starts a public health risk to other states through international spread of the disease. This is the fifth declaration of its kind by the WHO.

While the Congo outbreak began a year ago, the virus has infected more than 2,500 people and killed nearly 1,700, reports The New York Times.
