ECM publicizes final results for Bar Council election

Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has revealed the final results for the Bar Council election held on Saturday.

With 543 votes in his favor, Prominent Lawyer Maumoon Hameed secured the council’s presidency while former Attorney General Abdulla Muiz secured vice presidency at the Bar Council.

Maumoon beat prominent lawyer Husnu Suood with a difference of 142 votes, Suood having garnered just 401 votes.

Muiz, who contested for the post of vice president alongside opponent Mohamed Haleem, won with 792 votes and Haleem fell behind with just 139 votes.

Those who won seats at the Executive Committee of the council include Mohamed Faisal, Ahmed Muizzu, Shujun Mohamed, Anas Abdul Sattar, Anara Naeem and Mohamed Aseel Hassan. Faisal took the lead, having garnered 631 votes. Muizzu came second with 627, Shujun garnered 445, Anas garnered 361, Aseel garnered 356 and Anara garnered 343.

ECM on Sunday afternoon recounted ballots following a slight difference in number of votes for two contestants. However, there was no change in the results.

A total of 955 lawyers had cast their votes during this election out of the 1,488 lawyers eligible to vote.

The commission revealed that they had received a complaint regarding the election. A voter in Addu City did not have their name listed in the registry, said ECM.

Recently ratified Legal Profession Act states that the Executive Committee of the Bar Council shall consist of the President, Vice President, and six members.
