Elections Commission (EC) has stated that one candidate in the Bar Council has been disqualified.
EC stated that Ali Naseer, who applied for council membership, was initially accepted but their second evaluation showed that he did not have the required experience.
After the disqualification, there are now 22 candidates in the Bar Council election, to be held on Saturday.
EC has received two applications for the position of Bar Council President, two for Vice President, and 19 for membership.
Former Attorney General Husnu Suood and attorney Maumoon Hameed are vying for the Bar Council Presidency while attorney Abdulla Muiz and former Civil Court Judge Mohamed Haleem are vying for Vice Presidency.
The recently ratified Legal Profession Act states that the executive committee of the Bar Council will consist of the President, Vice President, and six members.
Around 1,600 Maldivian lawyers are eligible to vote in the election.
