Police negligence in Rilwan's abduction: committee meeting held behind closed doors

The committee decided to close off the meeting, to discuss a “confidential” letter submitted by the Prosecutor General (PG) Office

While the parliament’s committee on national security services met on Monday regarding possible negligence in the abduction of journalist Ahmed Rilwan, it was held behind closed doors.

The committee decided to close off the meeting, to discuss a “confidential” letter submitted by the Prosecutor General (PG) Office.

In addition, the committee was also to discuss reports submitted by the National Integrity Commission (NIC) and the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) regarding Rilwan’s case, as well as a letter sent in by his family.

Parliament, last week, accepted a motion regarding possible police negligence in the case.

While the motion was forwarded to the national security services committee for further review, it is to summon officials of all relevant institutions for questioning.

The committee is to conclude the case and compile a report within 30 days.

Rilwan was last seen purchasing a ticket to Hulhumalé at the ferry terminal in capital city Malé on August 8th, 2014. Police confirmed Rilwan’s abduction two years later, in August 2016.
