Elections Commission (EC) states that it has received 23 applications to run in the Bar Council election on July 13.

The deadline to apply for the election was Friday, 5pm.

Two applications are for the position of Bar Council President, two for Vice President, and 19 are for membership.

EC Vice President Amjad Mustafa said they are working to organize a peaceful and transparent election and will soon publicize details.

He said that 1,490 lawyers are eligible to vote and that 11 have re-registered to Male’ and Addu City.

Former Attorney General Husnu Suood and attorney Maumoon Hameed are vying for the Bar Council Presidency while attorney Abdulla Muiz and former Civil Court Judge Mohamed Haleem are vying for Vice Presidency.

The recently ratified Legal Profession Act states that the executive committee of the Bar Council will consist of the President, Vice President, and six members.
