Maldives is an amazing location for kiteboarding, says former World Champion Youri Zoon.

Zoon left the Maldives on Thursday morning, after taking part in the biggest kite surfing event -Raalhu Gudi- where the main theme was environmental awareness. He was a co-organizer of the event.

Speaking to RaajjeTV prior to his departure from Velana International Airport, Zoon said that this has been “a true, unbelievable experience.”

He said that the participants rode a total of 615km, highlighting that this was “a great distance.”

“It [also] leaves room for next year, to make it even bigger”

Furthermore, the 2x world champion said that Maldivian youngsters should understand that they live in “an amazing location for kiteboarding.”

“Maldivian youngsters should understand that they live in an absolutely beautiful place an amazing location for kiteboarding, so many opportunities here in Maldives to grow this sport and for them to grow within the sport as well. I hope this trip gets the youngster going, gets them on the board and gets them kiting a lot.”

Zoon said that he hopes to see a Maldivian kiteboarder “in a World Cup or maybe even the Olympic games,” one day.

The Raalhu Gudi was founded by local kiteboarder Asim ‘Simbe’ Mohamed. While participants rode from Malé to Maafushi island in 2018, Simbe said that he wanted to make the event "bigger and better" this year.
