First Lady Fazna Ahmed has taken part in a women’s swimming event under the theme “Break the Barrier,” on Saturday.

Organized by the Maldives Lifeguard Association in order to celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day, the swimming event took place on Saturday evening and saw over 100 female participants braving seven kilometers of the sea between Fonadhoo and capital city Malé in Kaafu atoll.

The women’s only event began from Fonadhoo and ended at Izzuddin Jetty in the capital city.

While the youngest female to have participated in the event was eight years old, women of all ages up to 56 participated in the swim.

The whole objective of the “Break the Barrier” swim was to help women overcome fears and prove themselves to be fearless in front of every obstacle that comes their way.

Alongside the First Lady, Minister of Fisheries Marine Resources and Agriculture Zaha Waheed, Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Shidhatha Shareef and Malé City Mayor Shifa Mohamed also participated in the awareness event to empower women.

Women from all across the nation joined the event, including from Haa Dhaal, Baa to Gaaf Dhaal atolls.
