Telecommunications giant Dhiraagu has introduced internet speeds of one gigabit per second for the first time in Maldives.
The new internet service was launched on Sunday at the Dhiraagu head office by Mohamed Maleeh Jamal, the Minister of Science, Communications and Technology.
Speaking at the event, Minister Maleeh said that the government aims to give easier access to digital services and to provide all the ministries’ public services from one help desk.
Minister Maleeh said that the government is working to improve the communication authority and ministry to develop its services.
He also said that it was important for Maldives to become one of the first countries to introduce 5G.
Also at the event, Dhiraagu CEO and Managing Director Ismail Rasheed said the 1gbps internet speed is 10 times faster than their 100mbps fixed broadband and that the new service will be made available in Male’, Villimale’, Addu, Fuvahmulah, Gan, Fonadhoo, Kulhudhuffushi, and Eydhafushi.
He said that Dhiraagu always aims to expand their services to as many people as possible and that 75 percent of the population now has access to their fiber broadband service.
