Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s social media activist Thayyib Shaheem has asked telecom giant Dhiraagu why it didn’t appeal the court order to provide access to his phone.

Last week, Thayyib Shaheem had learnt that Dhiraagu had given the police service access to his SIM card after an order from the Criminal Court.

In a letter to Dhiraagu, Thayyib’s lawyer Mahfooz Saeed said that the telecommunications regulation states that access to SIM cards cannot be given to a third party. He also said that only information regarding Thayyib’s communications can be given through a court order.

The lawyer also asked for a copy of the court order, and on whether Thayyib is responsible for service fees of the SIM card while it’s in the hands of the police.

Communication Authority of Maldives has recently issued a statement saying that communications of citizens are protected by the telecommunication regulation and the license provided to telecom operators.
