The construction of the winter-themed addition to the Rasrani Bageecha in capital city Malé has been expedited, reveals Housing Minister Mohamed Muizzu.

Muizzu revealed, through a post on his Twitter account, that the construction of a ‘winter-themed building’, which has been named the ‘Winter Corner’, is underway.

The government reopened the Sultan Park, itself a historical site given that it was built in the 16th century as part of the royal palace, as Rasrani Bageecha in August 21st last year.

The Sultan Park contained the Kalhu Vakaru Miskiy, which was built in the 18th century and is one of Maldives’ oldest mosques.

The mosque was commissioned by Sultan Shamsuddeen II and had been one of Malé City's few historical tourist attractions.

While the mosque has already been demolished to make room for the ice rink, commissioned by President Abdulla Yameen, Rasrani Bageecha is a park aimed at providing a family-friendly atmosphere.

The 'Winter Corner' will include an ice rink as well, the government has said.
