Home Ministry ‘instructed Prisons Director to treat injured prisoners’

Home Ministry has stated that it instructed the Prisons Director to immediately treat the prisoners after the recent abuse in Maafushi Prison.

In a press release, the ministry stated that the inspector of correctional service and inspectorate section employees visited Maafushi Prison as soon as they received information that officers and prisoners were injured in the incident.

The ministry stated that the officer who was assaulted by a prisoner was treated in Maafushi and taken to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, and that it has found that after the incident, prisoners had received injuries due to the officers using undue force to control the situation.

Due to this, the ministry stated that it instructed the prisons director to treat the prisoners immediately, adding that the government will not tolerate abuse of prisoners.

Inspector of Correctional Service is conducting an investigation into the incident to take action against the officers responsible, the ministry stated, adding that the government will also be taking the necessary steps to prevent such incidents.
