Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has granted medical leave to former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.

MCS announced this via twitter on Tuesday, saying that its medical board has decided to allow the former vice president to travel abroad for medical purposes.

Speaking on the matter, Adeeb’s wife Mariyam Nashwa said that the family had requested for a medical leave for him, due to various health complications since his incarceration in 2015.

Adeeb underwent a laser treatment to evaporate stones in his kidneys, back in November last year. He was transferred to house arrest earlier this year, with conditions, after being admitted to hospital numerous times.

According to his family, Adeeb has glaucoma, internal cysts, and kidney stones.

While he was arrested in November 2015, over the explosion aboard the presidential speedboat- which authorities claim was an assassination attempt on then-President Abdulla Yameen- he was sentenced to a total of 33 years on various charges afterwards.

However, all convictions have since been overturned, with the court ordering retrials in two cases. He will be free after he completes the 15-day sentence imposed in January, over contempt of court. The sentence will end on Thursday.
