Parliament has passed the temporary committee’s proposed distribution of the MPs to the parliamentary committees.
The motion was passed on Tuesday with all 80 present MPs voting in favor.
According to the distribution of MPs to the 132 seats in the 16 parliamentary committees and the 241 committee, main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which has 65 MPs, has been given 132 or 75% of the seats. This means that MDP MPs will fill eight to nine seats in each committee.
Jumhooree party (JP) and opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) each have five MPs and have been given 6% or 10 seats each, meaning that their MPs will fill one seat in each committee.
The three MPs of opposition People’s National Congress (PNC) received 3% or one seat in six committees. The two MPs of Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) received 2% or one seat in four committees, and the seven independent MPs received 8% or one seat in 14 committees.
