A committee has been formed to look into cases on social protection at the Ministry of Gender, Family, and Social Services.
In a press release on Sunday, the Ministry stated that the committee was formed after Minister Shidhatha Shareef met with people begging in the streets to fulfill urgent needs and inquired on their situation, and that they explained to her their concerns over employment, medical needs, and shelter.
It stated that a four-member intervention committee has been formed to investigate cases regarding people with special needs, children, the elderly, and others in need of state protection and that the committee has helped 20 people so far.
The committee has also begun helping people forced to leave their homes due to family problems, by talking to the family. The Ministry stated that two of the cases were serious and are being investigated with the help of the relevant authorities. The committee is also assisting people who have been unable to return to their native island.
The intervention committee is also assisting people who have not received benefits under the social protection system, people who have no money for medical treatment, and those who have been unable to find employment.
