Commissioner of Prisons Abdulla Munaz has said that they will investigate and penalize the employee responsible for releasing an unpardoned convict.

In April, a convict serving a sentence over a drug-related case was released reportedly by accident in the government’s work to release prisoners pardoned by the President.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, Prisons Commissioner Munaz said that, once they were notified of the incident, the convict was imprisoned again with the help of the police and the guilty employee was suspended.

Munaz said that an internal investigation has begun to determine whether the convict was released on purpose or by accident and that they are ready to file a police case and take action against the employee if necessary.

He also said that, in order to prevent similar issues, they have decided to improve internal procedures by adding checks and balances.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has stated that Minister Imran Abdulla has ordered an investigation into the convict’s release but that they were unable to disclose further information.
