Criminal Court decides not to increase Adeeb’s remand
The PG said she would appeal to the Supreme Court if the Criminal Court refuses to extend Adeeb’s remand

The Criminal Court has decided not to extend former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb’s remand.

Adeeb was brought to court on Sunday to decide on the 15-day remand issued by the High Court after it overturned his guilty verdict over the presidential speedboat blast and ordered a retrial.

After overturning the Adeeb’s 15-year prison sentence, the High Court in late May gave the Criminal Court 15 days to begin a retrial. There are now two days remaining.

Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham told RaajjeMV that they asked the Criminal Court to keep Adeeb in remand until the conclusion of the trial but that the court has returned two of Adeeb’s cases to the PG office.

She said that she would appeal to the Supreme Court if the Criminal Court refuses to extend Adeeb’s remand.

While Adeeb’s prison sentences totaling 33 years have been overturned, he is now serving a 15-day sentence over contempt of court, and will be free after completing the sentence on June 13.

He is currently serving his sentence under house arrest due to his ill health.
