Member of Parliament for Kaashidhoo constituency, Abdulla Jabir has sought to present Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath and Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid to the People’s Majlis.
In a letter addressed to Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on Wednesday, MP Jabir wrote that FM Shahid must be questioned regarding the relations between Maldives and Qatar and whether it is mentioned in the country’s foreign policy to strengthen bonds with Qatar.
This comes at a time the Foreign Minister has announced that they have begun discussions to strengthen relations between Qatar and Maldives.
The Kaashidhoo MP further sought to inquire on the details of the case regarding state’s debt to Business Image Group (BIG) from the Attorney General. As such, Jabir sought to inquire whether the state has appealed the Civil Court order and if they plan on settling the payment with the company.
In April, Parliament’s Public Finance Committee sent the case to the AG office for judicial review.
During the previous administration, the Civil Court ordered the now defunct state media company, Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation (MNBC), to pay off its MVR 78 million debt to private company, BIG. Public Service Media (PSM) settled MVR 30 million of the total owed to BIG in February this year.
In addition, Jabir also forwarded an emergency motion to Parliament, seeking to provide a swift and speedy solution to the families affected by the recurring rains across Maldives, after thorough evaluation.
