Authorities assist flooded islands
 
The affected islands were in the atolls Thaa, Laamu, Gaaf Alif, Gaaf Dhaalu, and Meemu

National Disaster Management Authority has stated that they have assisted the flood-affected islands.

At a press conference on Friday, the authority’s chief executive officer Hisaan Hassan said that the affected islands were in the atolls Thaa, Laamu, Gaaf Alif, Gaaf Dhaalu, and Meemu.

Hisaan said that officers of the Maldives National Defence Force and the Red Crescent volunteers have controlled the flooding.

Deputy chief executive Umar Fikry said that they have been active in controlling the flooding of 16 greatly affected islands up until Friday morning and that while roads are still flooded, they have been cutting pathways to re-route the floods.

Umar said MNDF have joined the island councils to make damage assessments and that the authority will monitor the situation after receiving the reports.

He also said that 15 households had to be evacuated and that the authority are assisting the families and monitoring heir situation.

During the current rainy weather, the authority has urged the public to barricade houses with cement bags and safeguard their valuables and electrical equipment.
