Indian Ambassador to Maldives, Sunjay Sudhir has called on the new parliament speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed.

The meeting was held in the People’s Majlis, on Thursday morning.

While the ambassador called on the speaker, parliament on Wednesday passed to invite Prime Minister Narenda Modi to address a parliament sitting, during his upcoming visit to the country.

The prime minister is scheduled to visit Maldives from June 7-8, fresh off his landslide re-election victory earlier this month.

The last time an Indian PM addressed the People’s Majlis was in 2011. Then-PM Manmohan Singh was also the first head of a government to address the Maldivian parliament.

Modi, who was elected in 2014, made his first official visit to Maldives in November 2018, to attend incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s inauguration ceremony, after rejecting the previous administration’s invitations.

Bilateral relations between Maldives and India had soured during the previous tenure, but things have vastly improved since the new administration took over.

President Solih’s maiden state visit was to the neighboring country.
