Johann Kriegler, who is assisting authorities to conduct an assessment on the Maldivian judiciary, met with the new parliament Speaker- former President Mohamed Nasheed- and other members of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
The “unofficial” meeting was held on Wednesday, with members sharing the Commission’s work with the Retired Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa.
JSC’s director Hassan Zaheen told RaajjeMV that they had also discussed the country’s judiciary “extensively” at the meeting.
Zaheen said that the meeting was held on Justice Kriegler’s request.
Kriegler was appointed as a consultant by the Attorney General’s Office on a ‘scoping mission.’ While he started his assessment last Saturday, he will continue to work here until June 2.
He is to study the current judicial structure, review its policies and conduct an independent assessment of the judiciary, as part of the government’s efforts to reform the judiciary.
In addition to the JSC members, Justice Kreigler is to meet with officials from state institutions and independent commissions, as well as civil society actors and legal experts.
His final report will be submitted to the Attorney General’s Office on August 29.
