A human trafficking suspect has been arrested in Maldives.
According to the Maldives Immigration, the individual- a foreigner- was arrested while attempting to leave the island nation.
It noted that the suspect had traveled to the Maldives with a woman, pretending to be a married couple with the intention of holidaying in the country.
However, Immigration said that the man was arrested while attempting to flee without the woman he claimed to be his wife, and that he had confiscated her passport.
The suspect has since been handed over to the Maldives Police Service, for further investigation.
Immigration recently began work to combat human trafficking, and a website to help victims was launched in April. It is investigating 67 companies suspected of committing the felony.
Earlier this month, Immigration announced that it has concluded investigations into 24 of the companies, and that their cases have been forwarded to the Maldives Police Service (MPS).
